Some movies come along once in a decade that remind you exactly why cinema exists. Project Hail Mary, releasing in theaters on March 20, 2026, is one of those films. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller β the creative duo behind the Spider-Verse animated films β and starring Ryan Gosling in what many critics are already calling the performance of his career, Project Hail Mary is a breathtaking, emotionally overwhelming science fiction adventure that manages to be both the smartest blockbuster in years and one of the most genuinely moving films you will ever see.
π The Story: A Man Alone in Deep Space
Project Hail Mary is based on the 2021 bestselling novel by Andy Weir β the same author who wrote The Martian. The film follows Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher played by Ryan Gosling, who wakes up completely alone on a spacecraft hurtling through deep space with no memory of who he is, where he is, or how he got there. As his memory slowly returns in fragments β presented through beautifully constructed flashback sequences β he begins to piece together the terrifying reality of his situation.
Earth is dying. A mysterious microscopic organism called the Astrophage has been slowly draining energy from the Sun, causing global temperatures to drop. If the Astrophage is not stopped, all life on Earth will be extinguished within decades. Grace β it turns out β is the sole survivor of a three-person mission to the Tau Ceti star system, the only star in the neighbourhood that appears unaffected by the Astrophage. He has been sent on a one-way mission across 12 light years of space to find out why Tau Ceti is immune β and to bring that knowledge back to Earth somehow, against all odds. But Grace is not alone for long. He soon makes contact with a fellow traveler from another world who has come on the exact same mission to save their own star β and an extraordinary friendship begins that forms the emotional heart of the entire film.
β Critics Consensus (Rotten Tomatoes β 94% Fresh): "A visually dazzling space odyssey that's carried along effortlessly by the gravitational pull of Ryan Gosling at his most winning, Project Hail Mary is a near-miraculous fusion of smarts and heart."
π Ryan Gosling Is Extraordinary
Ryan Gosling carries this film almost entirely on his own for long stretches, and he does so with an effortless charm and depth that reminds you why he is one of the best actors working in Hollywood today. His Ryland Grace is funny, vulnerable, brilliant, terrified, and ultimately heroic β a completely human character thrown into the most inhuman circumstances imaginable. The film requires Gosling to do everything: comedy, heart-breaking drama, physical performance, scientific exposition, and quiet contemplative moments of isolation that would sink a lesser performer. He handles all of it beautifully.
The film also features Sandra HΓΌller as Eva Stratt β the cold, pragmatic government official who recruits Grace and oversees the Earth-side elements of the Hail Mary project β in a performance that brings tremendous intelligence and complexity to what could have been a thankless supporting role. Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub round out the Earth-bound cast in flashback sequences that give the film its emotional and narrative foundation.
π¬ Directing & Technical Excellence
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, best known for animated films, bring a playfulness and emotional intelligence to the sci-fi blockbuster format that feels genuinely fresh. The film is shot by Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser β the man behind the stunning images of Dune and The Batman β and it is absolutely gorgeous. The IMAX experience is particularly extraordinary: nearly two hours of the film is presented in the full 1.43:1 IMAX ratio, allowing the vastness of deep space and the intimate interior of the Hail Mary spacecraft to coexist in a visual experience unlike anything you have seen in a cinema this year. The scientific concepts at the heart of the story β astrobiology, orbital mechanics, relativistic physics β are handled with the same care and accessibility that made The Martian such a pleasure, and Drew Goddard's screenplay (he also wrote The Martian) is both intellectually satisfying and emotionally propulsive.
π΅ The Soundtrack and Rocky
The film features a magnificent score, but it is the carefully chosen needle-drops that have become its most talked-about elements. Harry Styles' "Sign of the Times" and Oasis's "Champagne Supernova" are used to heartbreaking effect at key emotional moments. And then there is Rocky β Grace's alien companion, built as a practical physical puppet rather than pure CGI β whose design, movement, and the relationship he forms with Grace has made him the most beloved new character in cinema in years. Rocky has taken the internet by storm. Merchandise is already sold out everywhere. Ryan Gosling has been going full method at press events, speaking about Rocky as if he is entirely real, and the joy this brings to fans is completely genuine.
π Box Office & Awards Buzz
Project Hail Mary was projected to open to $45-55 million domestically in its opening weekend β strong numbers for an original sci-fi film with a PG-13 rating and a 2 hour 36 minute runtime. With its extraordinary critical reception (94% on Rotten Tomatoes, 78 on Metacritic), word of mouth is expected to drive the film to a long theatrical run. Awards season buzz has already begun, with early predictions placing the film in contention for Best Picture, Best Actor (Gosling), Best Director, Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2027 Academy Awards.
